Two Weeks of Yunnan

My bathroom in the dorm room at Yunnan Minzu Daxue (云南民族大学). Basically, showers involve drenching the entire room.

The lake on which Green Lake Park is situated.

Chinglish

Miao (Hmong) Village

Our direction, Lu Yuan, with a Miao woman and child; the old woman sang for us (the Miao are famous for their singing).

(left to right) Xiao Jo, Kalyn, Catherine, DT, Lauren, Richard, and Lexie at the Western Hills (it's good luck to drop the coin in the mouth of the statue - I think maybe a dragon - at the bottom of the pot).

View of Kunming and skyline from Western Hills

Lauren, Kalyn, and I climbed up one side, David, and Rebecca the other (they're the little red dot you might not be able to make out).

View of Western Hills from the lift

We climbed up and took the lift down

  1. Great photos, Margaux! The bottom one reminds me of the views we get of the bay here. And good to see shots of your fellow students. Funny you would climb up and ride down--I was thinking the same thing yesterday when Kathleen and I walked to the top of the East peak of Mt. Tam! Going down is just harder on the joints, and I seem to be more aware of that these days....

  2. Also, I'm interesting in hearing more about the Hmong. My very first professional consulting job, back right after I finished my PhD, was a study of Hmong mythology....

  3. And I love the photo of the village, too. It looks exactly what I saw in the small villages of Northern Thailand....well, maybe nicer than that. The homes look better maintained.

Your Dad is right, the last photo looks like our bay here. We enjoy the mountain a great deal, and look forward to sharing more time and spaces with you once you're stateside once again. For now, we're glad you're blogging and uploaded photos!

    Love, k
